In 2007, William Grant & Sons built a new single malt distillery on the same sight as their grain distillery at Girvan in Ayrshire. They named it Ailsa Bay and use most of its product in their Grants range of blended whiskies. This is their first offering of a single malt. It has been matured mainly in refill bourbon casks and comes with a hint of smoke precisely balanced with sweetness.
In the bay is the iconic islet of Ailsa Crag, the source of granite for Scotland's world-beating curling team's stones. To celebrate this connection, there is a tiny, smooth disc of granite set in to the stopper of the bottle.
